Tatami Yoroi — Folding Armor

The armor that travelled. Tatami yoroi — literally "folding armor" — was built around a single question that the great lacquered suits of the daimyō never had to answer: how do you stay protected when you also have to move, and move light?

The answer was to abandon the rigid cuirass. Instead of one shaped plate, tatami armor uses small iron plates (ita) sewn onto a cloth backing and linked with chainmail (kusari). The result folds flat, packs into a chest, and can be worn under a travelling robe without announcing itself. It was the armor of foot soldiers, of retainers on the road, of scouts and messengers — the people who had to arrive before they could fight.

That same logic makes it the most practical entry point today. Tatami sets are the lightest we build, the easiest to store, and by a wide margin the most comfortable to wear for any length of time. If you are buying your first armor, or you need something you can actually carry to a venue, this is where to start.

What you should not mistake it for is a lesser piece. The chainmail is hand-linked. The plates are individually finished. A well-made tatami suit has a quiet, functional beauty that the ornate sets cannot reach.

Typical delivery: about four weeks. Weight: approximately 8–12 kg.
