Imagawa Yoshimoto Samurai Armor — Court Lacquer, Full Life-Size Set

For most of his life Imagawa Yoshimoto was winning. He held Suruga, Tōtōmi and Mikawa, he was called the finest archer on the Tōkaidō road, and in 1560 he marched west toward Kyoto with an army that outnumbered everything in his path. Somewhere near a narrow gorge called Okehazama he stopped to rest.

Oda Nobunaga attacked during a thunderstorm with a fraction of the men. Yoshimoto was killed in his own camp, his army dissolved, and the entire balance of the Sengoku period changed in an afternoon. Every account of Nobunaga's rise begins here — which means Yoshimoto is remembered for the one hour of his life that went wrong.

His armor reflects the man before that hour: a court noble's taste applied to a soldier's equipment. Dark lacquered plate with dense multicoloured lacing, a tall gilt crest, and brocade at the sleeves and skirt where a plainer commander would have left cloth.
